Evidence: Mixed. Our smoke tests of both tools on Oct 25, 2026 are Tested within their scope (a local 3B model on a CPU-only box); prices and features are Reported from the vendors.

**Our pick:** Pick Claude Code for anyone relying on the Bash sandbox or permission rules (the 2.1.309 fixes close real gaps); pick Aider for developers who live in the terminal and want git-friendly AI edits. No overall winner: we have not benchmarked them against each other. **Updated:** 2026-11-03 (America/Chicago).

> As of Nov 3, 2026 (CT), Aider is free, Apache-2.0 software: you install it with pip and pay only your model provider, including local models. Claude Code comes with paid Claude plans: Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($20 monthly), Max at $100 and Ultra at $200. It is not on Claude Free. Pick Aider for any model and git-first edits; pick Claude Code to stay inside Anthropic's plans.

## Cost: Aider plus your API bill vs a Claude plan

Table: Claude Code and Aider at a glance (sources read Nov 3, 2026, CT)

| Tool | License | Price to start | Paid tiers | Models | Where it runs | Git handling | Latest version (date) | Our evidence label |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aider | Apache-2.0 (GitHub API) | $0; you pay your model provider, or nothing with a local model | None from Aider | "Almost any LLM, including local models" (aider.chat) | Terminal; also from your IDE or editor | Auto-commits each change with a commit message (aider.chat) | 0.86.2 on PyPI, uploaded Feb 11, 2026 (CT) | Tested Oct 25 (scope below); features Reported |
| Claude Code | Proprietary (npm: "SEE LICENSE IN README.md") | Claude Pro $17/mo billed annually ($200 up front) or $20 monthly; not on Claude Free | Max $100/mo, Ultra $200/mo; Team standard seat $20/seat/mo annual ($25 monthly) | Claude models through a Claude plan; we also ran it against a local model | Terminal, IDE extensions, desktop app and browser (Claude Code docs) | Edits files and runs commands; see the docs for its git and pull-request features | 2.1.317 on npm, published Nov 2, 2026 (CT) | Tested Oct 25 (scope below); prices Reported |

Claude's pricing FAQ says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans" and that it shares the same usage limits as the rest of the plan. Aider has no price of its own: the bill is whatever your model provider charges. GitHub showed 49,924 stars for Aider on Nov 3. Sources: [Claude pricing](https://claude.com/pricing), [aider.chat](https://aider.chat/), [PyPI](https://pypi.org/project/aider-chat/), [npm](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@anthropic-ai/claude-code). For Claude plan details, see [Claude Code pricing](https://theagenticweekly.com/what-is/claude-code-pricing).

## Models

Aider's homepage says it works best with frontier models but "can connect to almost any LLM, including local models". Claude Code is built for Claude models on a Claude plan; it can also be pointed at a local model through an Anthropic-compatible API, which is how we ran it (see [run Claude Code with a local model](https://theagenticweekly.com/guides/run-claude-code-with-a-local-model)). For model choices, see [best model for OpenCode, Cline and Claude Code](https://theagenticweekly.com/guides/best-model-for-opencode-cline-claude-code).

## Workflow

- **Aider:** "automatically commits changes with sensible commit messages", so you diff, manage and undo AI edits with ordinary git; it builds a map of the codebase to work in larger projects; it supports 100+ languages (aider.chat).
- **Claude Code:** "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools"; its docs cover the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, Slack, code review and running Claude in your own CI (Claude Code docs).
- Both are command-line first. Aider leaves the model choice entirely to you; Claude Code keeps you inside Anthropic's plans and usage limits.

## Install and first run

```
# Aider (Python 3.8-3.13, per aider.chat/docs/install)
python -m pip install aider-install
aider-install
# Claude Code (native installer, as used in our test)
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
```

Aider's install page says aider-install can set up its own Python 3.12 if needed ([install docs](https://aider.chat/docs/install.html)). Step-by-step: [how to use Claude Code](https://theagenticweekly.com/guides/how-to-use-claude-code).

## What we ran (Oct 25, 2026)

Both tools were smoke-tested on a CPU-only Linux VM (8 vCPU, no GPU) against Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct served by Ollama 0.40.11, with no vendor account or API key. These are pass/fail checks of one small task each, not a quality or speed ranking: the two tools were given different tasks.

Table: Our smoke tests, Oct 25, 2026 (Tested, scope only)

| Tool and version | Task | Result | Time | What went wrong |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aider 0.86.2 | Implement a clamp() function so a test passes | Passed in 3 of 3 trials | 26.8 to 32.2 s per trial | Did not install on Python 3.13 without a C++ compiler (worked on 3.12); left a stray placeholder comment in the file |
| Claude Code 2.1.310 | Fix return a-b to return a+b in calc.py | Partly worked: edited on the second prompt | 85.9 s (74.9 s to first token) | The first, vaguer prompt made no edit |

Our Aider run used --no-auto-commits, so its git auto-commit behaviour is Reported from aider.chat, not tested by us. Full logs: [Claude Code test](https://theagenticweekly.com/tests/claude-code) and [Aider test](https://theagenticweekly.com/tests/aider).

## Which to pick when

- **Pick Aider if** you want $0 software, your own choice of model (including local), and every edit as a git commit.
- **Pick Claude Code if** you already pay for Claude Pro, Max or Ultra and want one tool across terminal, IDE and desktop.
- **Pick neither yet if** you want an editor-first tool: see [Claude Code vs Cursor](https://theagenticweekly.com/compare/claude-code-vs-cursor) and [best AI coding agents](https://theagenticweekly.com/best/ai-coding-agents).

## FAQ

### Is Aider free?

Yes. Aider is Apache-2.0 open-source software with no price of its own; you pay your model provider, or nothing if you run a local model.

### Is Claude Code included in Claude Free?

No. Claude's pricing page, read Nov 3, 2026, lists Claude Code on Pro, Max and Ultra, and its FAQ says Claude Code is included in all paid plans.

### Can Claude Code use a local model?

We ran Claude Code 2.1.310 against a local Qwen2.5-3B model through Ollama on Oct 25, 2026; it made the edit on the second prompt. That is our smoke test, not a vendor-supported setup claim.

### Does Aider commit to git automatically?

Aider's homepage says it automatically commits changes with sensible commit messages. We disabled that in our test, so this is Reported.
