> GitHub Agentic Workflows, an open source project from GitHub Next, became generally available on October 28, 2026 for GitHub Free, Team and Enterprise; it compiles natural-language Markdown files into standard GitHub Actions YAML and runs GitHub Copilot or another coding agent to automate tasks like issue triage and CI failure analysis.

## What changed

- GitHub Agentic Workflows, an open source project from GitHub Next, is generally available on github.com for GitHub Free, Team and Enterprise, according to GitHub's changelog of October 28, 2026.
- Automations are written as natural-language Markdown files that the tool compiles into standard GitHub Actions YAML, so they reuse existing runner groups and policy constraints; GitHub lists issue triage, CI failure analysis, documentation updates and test writing as uses.
- Workflows can be powered by GitHub Copilot or another coding agent; the changelog says using the default Copilot CLI engine requires a Copilot license, and model providers can now be picked per workflow.
- Safeguards described by GitHub: read-only permissions by default, a sandboxed container behind the Agent Workflow Firewall, a safe outputs validation step and a threat detection job that scans proposed changes before they are applied.
- New since the public preview: self-hosted Actions Runner Controller runners with Docker-in-Docker, a non-experimental gh aw forecast for AI credit spend, a model router, new templates via gh aw add-wizard, and micro-VM isolation with enclaves for cross-repository workflows.

## In the source's words

## Early verdict

Teams already on GitHub Actions can try agentic automations without new infrastructure, since workflows compile to ordinary Actions YAML and default to read-only permissions. (Basis: Based only on the compilation model and safeguards the changelog describes; we have not run a workflow.)

## What we have not verified

- We did not install the gh aw CLI extension or run any agentic workflow.
- The productivity figures in GitHub's post come from a customer testimonial; we did not check them.
- The changelog does not give AI credit prices or say which coding agents besides Copilot are supported; we did not read the full release notes for that.
