# Google Gen AI Python SDK 3.0.0: API defaults to v1, httpx2 replaces httpx

> Google shipped google-genai / python-genai 3.0.0 on November 5-6, 2026. The release notes say the Gemini Developer API default is now v1 (was v1beta), the default HTTP client is httpx2 (httpx is no longer installed by default), and CodeExecutionResultStep.result is a union instead of a plain string.

## What changed

- Breaking: Gemini Developer API clients now default to API version v1 instead of v1beta. Vertex AI / enterprise clients with vertexai=True stay on v1beta1.
- Breaking: the default HTTP client is now httpx2, and httpx is no longer installed by default. Restoring httpx needs both pip install "google-genai[httpx]" and GOOGLE_GENAI_HTTP_CLIENT=httpx.
- httpx2 defaults to the OS certificate trust store via truststore when SSL_CERT_FILE and SSL_CERT_DIR are unset, instead of certifi.
- Breaking for interactions: CodeExecutionResultStep.result changes from string to a CodeExecutionResultStepResult union; text-only JSON is unchanged but readers must check the variant.
- GOOGLE_GENAI_API_VERSION can restore beta behavior; HttpOptions.api_version in code still takes precedence. Same release also adds source_text transcription fields and MALFORMED_RESPONSE.

## Early verdict

A dependency and default-API break for Python Gemini Developer API users; plan for httpx2 and the v1 default before bumping majors. (Basis: Based on the published breaking-changes section of the v3.0.0 release notes; we have not run the upgrade.)

## What we have not verified

- We did not install google-genai 3.0.0 or compare httpx vs httpx2 behavior under load.
- We did not verify SSL/truststore differences against every common corporate proxy setup.
- PyPI twin google-genai 3.0.0 was paired from the watcher; we did not re-diff the wheel against the GitHub tag.
