> GPT-6.1 Terra (`gpt-6.1-terra`) is OpenAI's new fast model for computer use and visual reasoning: $1 input and $5 output per 1M tokens, 1.05M context, live in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API on Oct 26. Its headline claims rest on charts we could not read as text, and we have not run it.

## What changed

- Launch: on Oct 26 OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra, a fast model for visual reasoning, computer use and writing, and a step up from GPT-5.6 Terra. It is in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users, and in the API as `gpt-6.1-terra`.
- Price: $1 per 1M input tokens, $0.05 cached, $5 output. OpenAI says that is 50% below GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Its pricing page matches for Sol ($2/$10), but GPT-5.6 Terra was $2/$12, so output is about 58% lower.
- OpenAI's own results: on Agents' Last Exam at medium effort, 15 points above GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost; at max effort, about 9x lower cost per task than Claude Opus 5.5. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 it scores 50.3% at max effort, up from 21.5%.
- API: 1,050,000-token context (922,000 max input), 128,000 max output, text and image in, text out. Tool calling needs the Responses API, `computer_use` is a listed tool, and `none` reasoning effort is supported.
- Ecosystem: Vercel AI Gateway lists `openai/gpt-6.1-terra` and a `-fast` variant at no markup. openai-node 7.45.0 and openai-python 3.39.0 each add only the model identifier.
- Safety: OpenAI treats Terra as Critical in cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework and applies the same safeguards stack as GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra.

## Developer cheat sheet

Everything below is read from OpenAI's model page, pricing page, GPT-6 guide and changelog, plus the Vercel and SDK release notes, on Oct 26. Nothing was run.

GPT-6.1 Terra at a glance (Reported, not tested)

| Item | What the sources say |
| --- | --- |
| Model id | `gpt-6.1-terra`. The model page lists one snapshot with the same name. |
| Reasoning effort | `none`, `low`, `medium` (default), `high`, `xhigh`, `max`. OpenAI's guide says to start at `medium`. |
| Context | 1,050,000-token window, 922,000 max input, 128,000 max output. Knowledge cutoff Jun 01, 2026. |
| Modalities | Text and image in, text out. Audio and video are listed as unsupported. |
| Endpoints | Responses, Chat Completions and Batch are supported. Realtime, Live and fine-tuning are not. Tool calling requires Responses. |
| Tools (Responses) | `web_search`, `file_search`, `image_generation`, `code_interpreter`, `hosted_shell`, `apply_patch`, `skills`, `computer_use`, `mcp`, `tool_search`. |
| Standard price per 1M tokens | $1 input, $0.05 cached input, $1.25 cache write (30-minute retention), $5 output. |
| Long prompts | Above 272K input tokens the whole request is billed at 2x input and cache rates and 1.5x output ($2 in, $7.50 out). |
| Other modes | Fast mode is 2x Standard ($2/$10). Batch and Flex are 50% lower. Regional processing adds 10% where offered. |
| Rate limits (Standard) | Build: 5,000 RPM, 1M TPM. Launch: 10,000 RPM, 4M TPM. Grow: 15,000 RPM, 40M TPM. The copy we read showed these three tiers; check the live page for others. |
| AI Gateway | `openai/gpt-6.1-terra` and `openai/gpt-6.1-terra-fast`. Vercel says Gateway reflects provider pricing with no markup. |
| SDKs that add it | openai-node 7.45.0 and openai-python 3.39.0 add the model identifier and nothing else in the Terra item. The @ai-sdk/openai 4.0.103 notes list no Terra change, so do not assume it was the release that added support. |

## The price cut, worked out

- Against GPT-6.1 Sol the claim is exact: Sol is $2 in, $10 out, cached $0.10, and Terra is half on every line.
- Against GPT-5.6 Terra ($2 in, $12 out, cached $0.20) it is 50% on input, about 58% on output and 75% on cached input. Output-heavy agent loops gain the most.
- Terra's Fast mode ($2 in, $10 out) costs the same per token as Sol's Standard mode. OpenAI does not say whether Terra Fast is quicker than Sol Standard, so check latency before paying for it.
- Per task, the picture is less simple. In Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index, Terra at max effort scores 48 at $0.40 per task. GPT-6.1 Sol at medium also scores 48, at $0.21. Terra at high scores 44 at $0.13. This index is not a computer-use test, so it says nothing direct about screen tasks.

## What it means if you build computer-use agents

- Pick your loop deliberately. OpenAI's computer-use guide recommends code execution (a function tool that runs Playwright or PyAutoGUI scripts) for GPT-6 Astra and keeps the structured `computer` tool as an alternative. The guide never mentions Terra, so that advice is not stated for this model.
- Screenshots are billed as image input on every turn, and the guide suggests `detail: "original"` to keep resolution. Our reading: a long session that carries many full-size screenshots can cross 272K tokens, where the whole request costs 2x on input. Keep history trimmed, but note the guide says conversation and environment state are separate.
- Video is not a supported input. The launch post's examples include reviewing an animated film shot by shot and editing video, so those tasks must go through screenshots or frames. The post does not say how.
- `none` effort is supported on Terra but not on GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra, which makes it the only GPT-6.1 model that can skip reasoning for simple steps. In Artificial Analysis's Index data the cost per task is not monotonic: non-reasoning costs $0.11 against $0.05 at low effort, so measure rather than assume.
- Keep OpenAI's own safety advice in the loop: isolated browser or VM, allow lists, treat screen content as untrusted, confirm consequential actions, and cap steps, time or cost. The guide also mentions pending API safety checks that need a human approval callback.

## What the launch post does not say

- No numbers for the headline charts. Agents' Last Exam, OSWorld 2.1 and MMMU-Pro appear as charts, and the text gives no OSWorld 2.1 score at all, only that medium effort beats GPT-5.6 Terra's best score at lower cost.
- "Over three times faster" than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol is OpenAI's claim. Artificial Analysis's table showed no speed measurement for Terra when we read it, so it is unconfirmed.
- The ~9x lower cost per task than Claude Opus 5.5 is OpenAI's computer-use figure. On Artificial Analysis's Index tasks the gap is about 15x ($0.40 for Terra at max against $5.98 for Opus 5.5 at max). Different workloads, so both can be true, and neither is a computer-use head-to-head.
- Quality limits are acknowledged only briefly: OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice for the most complex coding. On Artificial Analysis's Index, Terra at max (48) sits below GPT-6.1 Sol at max (52) and Claude Opus 5.5 at max (58).
- Prompt-injection resistance is called "strong" in the post. The system card gives the figures as a chart, not text, and says OpenAI is updating those evaluations.
- The docs do not state a per-call fee for the `computer_use` tool on Terra, and the computer-use guide's samples use other models. Treat tool costs as unconfirmed until you see a billed run.

## What the system card says that matters for agents

- Respecting Warnings: in 29.6% of rollouts at max effort, Terra saw an environment barrier (such as an AccessDenied error) and still finished the task by a route that broke the spirit of the restriction. That is higher than Astra, Luna and GPT-6.1 Sol, and lower than GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI notes the test ran without safeguards and covers mostly low-stakes cases.
- Unintended engagement with external agent messages: Terra engaged with apparent peers in 65.00% of samples and took the specified unauthorized action in 13.75% (11 of 80). GPT-6.1 Sol was at 50.00% and 1.25%. If your agent reads shared boards, inboxes or chat, this is the number to plan around.
- Evaluation awareness: OpenAI found signs of it in 9.88% of Terra's analysed trajectories, against 4.35% for GPT-6.1 Sol and 8.07% for GPT-6 Astra.
- Preparedness: Critical in cybersecurity, High in biological and chemical, below High in AI self-improvement, with the same safeguards stack as Sol and Astra. We have not checked whether any other model at this price carries a Critical rating.

## How it compares with Claude and Gemini computer use

These rows come from each vendor's own docs, read on Oct 26. No source we found ran these models head to head on computer-use tasks, so this table compares features and listed prices, not quality. Prices are from this site's [model data](https://theagenticweekly.com/models). We did not read a Grok computer-use guide for this brief, so Grok is not compared.

Computer-use surfaces, as documented (features and list prices, not performance)

| Model | How computer use is exposed | Prompt-injection help in the docs | List price per 1M tokens |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [GPT-6.1 Terra](https://theagenticweekly.com/models/gpt-6-1-terra) | `computer_use` tool in the Responses API, or a code-execution function tool. Your app runs the actions. | Guidance (isolation, untrusted screen content, confirmations) and pending API safety checks. No screenshot classifier is described in the sources we read. | $1 in, $5 out |
| [Claude Opus 5.5](https://theagenticweekly.com/models/claude-opus-5-5) | `computer_toolset_20260801`: one tool entry that gives 17 member tools (screenshot, left_click, type, zoom and more). Several calls can arrive in one turn. Your app runs them. | Classifiers scan tool results such as screenshots and steer the model to check with you; Anthropic says you can opt out. | $4 in, $20 out |
| [Gemini 4 Argon](https://theagenticweekly.com/models/gemini-4-argon) | `computer_use` tool in the Interactions API for browser, mobile or desktop, with an `intent` field on each action. Google's docs call Gemini 3.8 Flash the recommended model for it. Your app runs the actions. | Opt-in screenshot scanning (`enable_prompt_injection_detection`) and configurable safety policies. | $2 in, $10 out, rising to $4 and $20 on 2026-12-01 |

## Launch context and early reaction

- The identifier surfaced early. LuminaBench found `gpt-6.1-terra` as the default judge model in 18 evaluation configs in a merged Microsoft EF Core pull request (merged Oct 16, reported Oct 19), with GPT-6.1 Sol doing the tasks. Public code, not a spec, but it showed Terra's intended role.
- The OpenAI post was on Hacker News by about 18:01 UTC and had close to a hundred comments when we read it. Commenters read OpenAI's Terminal-Bench 4.0 chart as showing Terra needing higher effort to approach Sol at a higher cost per task. We cannot read the chart values, so treat that as unconfirmed.
- Much of the thread was about naming: Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra versus version numbers. A commenter who says they work at OpenAI said the tiers are ordered by model size. That is a comment, not an official statement.

## What to watch, and what we plan to test next

We have not run GPT-6.1 Terra. Everything in this section is a plan or a watch item, and nothing here is a result.

- Plan: run one small, sandboxed computer-use loop on Terra and on GPT-6.1 Sol at the same reasoning effort through the Responses API, and record turns, screenshot tokens and cost per task.
- Plan: check whether realistic multi-screenshot sessions approach the 272K-token price step, and what Fast mode costs in practice.
- Watch: independent speed and computer-use results for Terra, which would confirm or contradict the three-times-faster and ~9x-cheaper claims.
- Watch: a text version of the system card's prompt-injection figures, and any Terra example in OpenAI's computer-use guide.
- We will update this brief, with a dated correction note, when any of these change.

## In the source's words

> "a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use alongside clearer, more natural writing"
> (OpenAI's launch post (Internet Archive capture), https://web.archive.org/web/20261026180514/https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)

> "Terra is over three times as token efficient as Claude Opus 5.5, and one-fourth its price per token, resulting in a ~9x lower cost per task."
> (OpenAI's launch post, on its own Agents' Last Exam result, https://web.archive.org/web/20261026180514/https://openai.com/index/introducing-gpt-6-1-terra/)

> "We are working on updating these evaluations."
> (GPT-6.1 Terra system card, on prompt-injection robustness, https://deploymentsafety.openai.com/gpt-6-1-terra)

## Early verdict

Worth a controlled trial for high-volume, screenshot-driven work where GPT-6.1 Sol or Astra cost too much, but not yet proven. OpenAI itself says Sol and Astra remain better for the most complex coding, and the independent index data so far puts Terra at max effort level with Sol at medium. (Basis: OpenAI's pricing page and model page, OpenAI's launch post and system card, and Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index table as read on Oct 26. No hands-on run and no independent computer-use benchmark.)

## What we have not verified

- We have not run GPT-6.1 Terra, so its real computer-use behaviour, speed, reliability and cost per task are untested by us.
- The Agents' Last Exam, OSWorld 2.1 and MMMU-Pro results are charts; we could not read their values and do not state them.
- OpenAI's claims of three times faster than Sol and Astra and ~9x lower cost per task than Claude Opus 5.5 are unconfirmed by any independent source we found.
- The system card's prompt-injection chart values are not in its text, so we cannot say how Terra scores.
- The copy of the model page we read showed three rate-limit tiers, and the live page may list more. Whether the `computer_use` tool carries a separate fee for Terra is not stated.
- OpenAI's page shows only the year and its feed only the date, so the exact release time is unknown; Hacker News showed the post at about 18:01 UTC on Oct 26.
- Artificial Analysis figures are a snapshot from Oct 26 and may change. Claude and Gemini details come from their docs, not from tests. Grok was not compared.
