> Node-graph engine for local and cloud image, video, audio and 3D generation.

## Verdict

**The tool to learn if you want maximum control over open models on your own GPU; it has a learning curve.**

Good for:
- Power users who want to run open models locally
- Artists building repeatable image or video workflows
- People who want to mix local models with partner nodes

Skip if:
- You want a one-click consumer app
- You do not have a capable GPU and do not want to use partner (paid) nodes

Tested. Tested 2026-10-26 (America/Chicago). ComfyUI 0.42.0 installed in 17.42 s and its CPU-only server was ready in 30.1 s with 1014 node types, but we did not generate an image. Test environment: Linux x86_64 virtual machine (Debian 13), 8 vCPU, 15 GiB RAM, no GPU; no vendor account, login or API key. No language model was involved in this test. Not tested: Generating any image: no checkpoint was downloaded (the SD-Turbo file we considered is 5.2 GB, and the machine's free memory could not hold it); GPU use, custom nodes, the ComfyUI Manager, workflows from the web interface, and the browser UI; Speed of image generation on CPU or on a GPU. These are smoke tests, not a benchmark. Full log: /tests/comfyui.

## How to set it up: Install ComfyUI with comfy-cli

Steps come from the vendor's own pages or docs. We have not run them ourselves.

1. **Install the CLI.** The README documents comfy-cli.

```
pip install comfy-cli
```
2. **Install ComfyUI.** Run the install command and follow the prompts.

```
comfy install
```
3. **Start from a template.** Use the built-in workflow templates to generate your first image before you build graphs from scratch.

## Pros and cons

Pros:
- Huge model and workflow ecosystem
- Runs locally; README claims it can run big models on as little as 4GB VRAM with 8GB RAM
- Frequent releases

Cons:
- GPL-3.0 license has copyleft obligations for derivatives
- Steep learning curve
- Partner nodes use paid third-party models
