# Gemini CLI v0.65.0: what's new, verdict & setup

Canonical: https://theagenticweekly.com/tools/gemini-cli · Released: 2026-10-20 · Last verified: 2026-10-25 · Evidence: Reported (not run by us) · Vendor: Google · Official site: https://github.com/google-gemini/gemini-cli

> Google's open-source terminal agent for Gemini, now largely replaced by Antigravity CLI for consumers.

## Verdict

**Skip it as a new starter on a consumer plan; keep it only if you are on an enterprise license or a paid API key.**

Good for:
- Organizations on Gemini Code Assist Standard or Enterprise (Google says their access is unchanged)
- People using Gemini CLI with a paid Gemini API key
- Developers who want an open-source Apache-2.0 terminal agent they can read and extend

Skip if:
- You are on a Google AI Pro/Ultra plan or the free individual tier: Google says Gemini CLI stopped serving those requests on June 18, 2026
- You want the best coding experience with the latest Gemini models: the README itself points to Antigravity CLI

Status: Reported. Written from official release notes and docs; we have not run this release ourselves.

Pricing: Not verified. We have not verified pricing for this tool; see the official site.

## Best for

- [Best AI tool for AI coding agents](https://theagenticweekly.com/best/ai-coding-agents) (#3): Still maintained for enterprise and paid API key users, but Google steers everyone else to Antigravity CLI.

## What's new

Gemini CLI v0.65.0 is a fix-heavy stable release (session resume, OAuth, workspace trust) with custom OTLP headers for telemetry. The bigger story: Google says Gemini CLI stopped serving consumer plans in June 2026 in favor of Antigravity CLI.

- Custom OTLP headers are now supported in telemetry configuration.
- Workspace settings are enforced as read-only in untrusted folders.
- Fixes for session resume: duplicate tool-response turns and history deletion on a quick exit.
- OAuth fixes: callback iss validation aligned with RFC 9207 and fixes for infinite verification and retry loops.
- Fix for a hang on the Enter key in interactive mode, plus several terminal UI fixes.
- Performance: ignore filtering optimized with subtree pruning.

## How to set it up: Try Gemini CLI (paid API key or enterprise) and know your alternative

Install commands come from the README. We have not run Gemini CLI. Consumer-plan users should read Google's transition post first.

1. **Check which plan you are on.** Per Google's May 19, 2026 announcement, Gemini CLI stopped serving requests for Google AI Pro and Ultra and for free individual use on June 18, 2026. Enterprise licenses and paid API keys keep access.
2. **Run it without installing.** If you qualify, you can try Gemini CLI instantly with npx.

```
npx @google/gemini-cli
```
3. **Or install globally.** The README lists npm and Homebrew among other options.

```
npm install -g @google/gemini-cli
# or: brew install gemini-cli
```
4. **If you are a consumer user, look at Antigravity CLI.** Google says Antigravity CLI is available to everyone and keeps Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents and Extensions (as Antigravity plugins), though not with 1:1 feature parity. See the sources below.

## Pros and cons

Pros:
- Open source under Apache-2.0
- Weekly releases and a fast-moving issue tracker
- Enterprise access unchanged per Google

Cons:
- Not available on consumer plans since June 18, 2026 (per Google)
- README says it is not optimized for the latest Gemini models
- This release is mostly bug fixes
