- June 8, 2026: OpenAI published that it had "submitted a confidential S-1" draft registration statement to the SEC. It said, "We have not decided on timing yet; it may be a while because there are things we want to do that are likely easier as a private company." - Sept 12, 2026: in an interview with Fortune, Altman said an IPO this year is "ill-timed" given the safety concerns, and Fortune writes that it "won't take place until 2027" ([Fortune, Sept 12, 2026](https://fortune.com/2026/09/12/sam-altman-interview-ai-doomsday-safety-models-control-ipo-2027/)).
- Oct 5, 2026: Fortune's longer write-up quotes Altman: "Given everything happening with safety, this right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public" ([Fortune, Oct 5, 2026](https://fortune.com/2026/10/05/can-superintelligence-be-controlled-sam-altman-openai-ai-safety-doomsday-risk-delayed-ipo/)).

Reuters also covered the Sept 12 interview; we could not open that page this run, so we do not rely on it. OpenAI's own June 8 statement above has not been updated by any new OpenAI filing.
