ChatGPT Work vs ChatGPT Chat vs Codex: what each is for
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's agent mode inside ChatGPT for delegating multi-step tasks that end in a reviewable result such as a deck, spreadsheet or recurring update, while ChatGPT Chat is for quick answers and Codex is the dedicated tool for software work. This is reported from OpenAI's own pages, read 2026-10-26 (America/Chicago); we have not used ChatGPT Work ourselves.

What is ChatGPT Work?
OpenAI's Learn guide calls ChatGPT Work "a way to delegate real work to ChatGPT": you give it a task with a clear outcome, it can use your files, plugins and approved tools, and you follow progress, answer questions, change direction and approve important actions. It says to use Chat for an answer, explanation, brainstorm or short draft, and Work for tasks that use multiple sources, take meaningful time, produce an output you review, or repeat over time. For the model context see GPT-6.1 Terra and our brief on it; for the product see ChatGPT and best AI assistants.
ChatGPT Work vs Codex
OpenAI's Learn guide says that if you have used Codex for non-coding work, you can stay in Codex or use ChatGPT Work, which it says gives the same core capabilities in an experience designed for everyday work. The Help Center capture says Codex remains dedicated to software development, remains a separate view in the ChatGPT desktop app with its own history, and that Work follows the same usage structure as Codex. Signing in to Codex with ChatGPT uses your plan's usage and billing, while your own API key uses API pricing. For coding tools see Codex CLI and which coding agents can use GPT-6.1 Terra.
ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork
We do not compare these feature by feature, because we did not gather Anthropic's Cowork documentation. One sourced fact: Anthropic's help-center release notes for September 16, 2026 say Cowork's capabilities were rolling out into any Claude conversation for Pro and Max plans, and its pricing page's banner reads "Claude Cowork is now just Claude." See Claude.
Which plans include ChatGPT Work, and is it free?
The Help Center capture says Work is available on ChatGPT web and mobile "for eligible paid plans", and in the desktop app when included for your plan and workspace. OpenAI's Terra launch post lists Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users for Work and Codex. We found no statement that Work is available on the free plan, and the capture's wording points the other way, but we have not re-read OpenAI's live plan page. Usage for Work follows Codex's allowance and credits; OpenAI says Work usage varies by task.
What to use for what
- A quick answer, rewrite or brainstorm: Chat.
- A deck, analysis, spreadsheet or recurring update from your files and tools: Work.
- Code, tests and repository changes: Codex.
- Before starting a big Work task, check your plan's usage, as OpenAI's guide advises; longer tasks may use more credits.
What we tested
Nothing: we have not used ChatGPT Work for this page. The comparison table reports OpenAI's guide and launch post as read on 2026-10-26, and the Help Center article only as captured by the Internet Archive on 2026-10-12, before the GPT-6.1 Terra launch.

- ChatGPT: Still the broadest all-round assistant; the October updates matter most if you write documents, decks or work with audio. Reported (not run by us).
- Codex CLI: A quality-of-life release: worth updating if you re-type the same prompts or switch models a lot, not a reason to switch tools. Tested (smoke test, 2026-10-25, local Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct, not vendor models).
