Our verdict
A good open-source pick if you want an agent inside your IDE or a CLI and an SDK to embed it; the October notes are incremental.
Good for
- IDE users who want an open-source agent
- Teams that want to embed an agent through the SDK
- People who bring their own model API keys
Skip if
- You want one polished all-in-one app with bundled models
- You only want headline features; these releases are mostly fixes and plumbing
Status: Reported. This write-up is based on official release notes and docs; we have not run this release ourselves yet.

Best for
- Best AI tool for AI coding agents: Open-source agent with extension, CLI and SDK surfaces and very frequent releases.
What’s new
Cline shipped a batch of releases on Oct 16-17: CLI 3.0.73, desktop 0.0.48, SDK 0.0.95 and extension 4.1.25. The SDK notes cover GPT-6 request fixes and a refreshed model catalog.
- SDK v0.0.95 (Oct 17): OpenAI-compatible requests for GPT-6 models now send max_completion_tokens instead of max_tokens so OpenAI and Azure no longer reject them.
- SDK v0.0.95: The model catalog was refreshed from 6,952 to 7,041 models and adds the CommandCode and Reflection providers.
- SDK v0.0.95: The hub daemon records which client started it and publishes that as OpenTelemetry resource attributes.
- The same day Cline published CLI v3.0.73 and desktop v0.0.48; the IDE extension was at v4.1.25 on Oct 16.
How to set it up: Install Cline
Steps come from the vendor's own docs or README. We tried Cline on 2026-10-25; it only partly worked in our test (see /tests/cline-cli), so it is not marked Tested.
Install the CLI
The README gives an npm global install. Node.js is required.
npm i -g clineOr install the SDK to embed it
The README also documents an SDK package for building your own tools on top of Cline.
npm install @cline/sdkConnect a model
Open Cline and choose a model provider, then paste your own API key. Provider options change often, so check the in-app list.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Apache-2.0 license, large community
- Extension, CLI and SDK in one project
- Wide provider catalog (7,041 models listed in the SDK notes)
Cons
- Several packages release separately, so version numbers differ by surface
- Costs depend on the model provider you choose
- Our own run only partly worked: Cline CLI 3.0.73 edited calc.py correctly with a local 3B model, then failed on every follow-up command with 'Invalid input' until the session was aborted at 68 s. See /tests/cline-cli
Alternatives and comparisons

FAQ
What changed in Cline on Oct 17, 2026?
SDK v0.0.95 fixed GPT-6 request parameters for OpenAI-compatible providers, refreshed the model catalog and added two providers; CLI v3.0.73 and desktop v0.0.48 shipped the same day.
How do I install the Cline CLI?
Run npm i -g cline. The README also documents the IDE extension and the SDK.
Is Cline free?
The software is Apache-2.0 open source. You pay your chosen model provider for usage; we did not verify any Cline-hosted pricing.
What we have not verified
- Feature-level changes in extension 4.1.25 (not read)
- Any hosted Cline pricing
- Anything beyond the attempt in /tests/cline-cli: we ran it once on a local 3B model and it did not complete our task, so it stays Reported
