Our verdict
Update now if you use the sandbox or run Claude Code on a cloud provider; skip if you wanted flashy new features, this is a hardening release.
Good for
- Anyone relying on the Bash sandbox or permission rules (the 2.1.309 fixes close real gaps)
- Teams running Claude Code through Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry
- Enterprise admins who want role-based control over cloud sessions and Remote Control
Skip if
- You are looking for new headline capabilities; these two releases are mostly fixes
- You script claude ultrareview; check the new --trust-workspace requirement before updating CI
Tested. Tested 2026-10-25 (America/Chicago). Installed with Anthropic's native installer (read first): "claude --version" printed 2.1.310 (the npm package installed 2.1.197, so use the native installer for this release). Pointed at a local Ollama model through its Anthropic-compatible API, headless "claude -p" ran the Edit tool and changed calc.py a-b to a+b when given the exact file path and strings; a vaguer first prompt made no edit (it said calc.py did not exist). Not tested: Claude models, subscription login, the sandbox fixes or ultrareview. Test environment: Linux x86_64 box with 8 CPUs and no GPU, no vendor account or API key. Agent tools were pointed at a local open-weight model (Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct, 4-bit, served by Ollama 0.40.11), so we tested the tool, not any vendor's hosted models. Full log: /tests/claude-code.

- Evidence
- Tested (smoke test, 2026-10-25, local Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct, not vendor models). A smoke test is not a benchmark.
- What we ran
- Installed with Anthropic's native installer (claude --version printed 2.1.310) and ran one headless edit task (change a-b to a+b in calc.py) through a local model; the first, vaguer prompt failed and the second, with the exact path and strings, succeeded.
- Model used
- Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct (4-bit), a small local open-weight model served by Ollama 0.40.11; no vendor-hosted model was used
- Environment
- Linux x86_64 box, 8 CPUs, no GPU; no vendor account, login or API key
- Not tested
- Claude models, subscription login, the sandbox and permission fixes, claude ultrareview and --trust-workspace, Bedrock/Vertex/Foundry.

Best for
- Best AI tool for AI coding agents: One of the most actively maintained coding agents, with daily releases and detailed changelogs.
- Best AI tool for vibe coding: Strong for vibe coding from the terminal or VS Code if you want the agent to run commands and edit files for you.
- Best AI tool for agent building: Plugins, skills, hooks and an Agent SDK are referenced in the changelog, which makes it a base for building your own agent workflows.
What’s new
Claude Code 2.1.309 and 2.1.310 are heavy on sandbox and permission-check fixes, plus the Monitor tool now working on Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry and new Enterprise controls for cloud sessions.
- v2.1.310: The Monitor tool and plugin monitors now work on Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry, and when telemetry or nonessential traffic is disabled.
- v2.1.310: Requests no longer fail behind gateways that reject the effort beta value; Claude Code retries without it.
- v2.1.310: Claude Code cloud sessions and Remote Control permissions can be given to Enterprise custom roles.
- v2.1.310: On Linux, /sandbox now names Ubuntu's AppArmor user-namespace restriction when it stops the sandbox starting, and how to lift it.
- v2.1.309: Many security-flavored fixes: sandboxed Bash no longer runs shell startup files outside the sandbox, macOS sandbox denyWrite globs work through symlinks, and sandboxed commands can no longer modify the MCP config passed with --mcp-config.
- v2.1.309: Several Bash permission-check fixes for compound commands, redirects and worktree-isolated sessions.
- v2.1.309: claude ultrareview now requires workspace trust; scripts pass --trust-workspace.
How to set it up: Install Claude Code and check the sandbox
Install steps come from the project README. We ran the install and a short headless task on 2026-10-25. The sandbox step is based on the release notes and was not tested by us.
Install Claude Code
The README recommends the native installer. npm installation is marked deprecated.
# macOS / Linux curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash # or: brew install --cask claude-code # Windows (PowerShell): irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iexStart it in your project
Navigate to your project directory and run claude, then sign in when prompted.
cd your-project claudeUpdate to the latest version
These fixes shipped in 2.1.309 and 2.1.310. Update using the method you installed with and check the version afterwards.
claude --versionReview your sandbox setup
The release notes mention /sandbox and a Linux warning that names Ubuntu's AppArmor restriction on user namespaces when it stops bubblewrap from starting. Run /sandbox inside Claude Code to see your status. (Not tested by us.)

Pros and cons
Pros
- Very frequent releases with detailed notes
- Works in terminal, VS Code and desktop, with plugins and skills
- Sandbox and permission model keeps getting tighter
Cons
- These notes are long and mixed together; hard to tell which fixes affect you
- Some changes are behavior changes (for example ultrareview now requires workspace trust, and sed -i no longer previews edits)
- Pricing and plan limits were not checked for this write-up
- We did not test with Claude models or a subscription; the sandbox and ultrareview changes were not exercised
Alternatives and comparisons
- Codex CLI: OpenAI's open-source coding agent that runs in your terminal.
- Gemini CLI: Google's open-source terminal agent for Gemini, now largely replaced by Antigravity CLI for consumers.
- Kiro: AWS's agentic coding tool that turns prompts into requirements, designs and tasks (spec mode), with an IDE and a CLI.
- OpenHands: Open-source AI coding agent platform you can start locally, automate with workflows and run with any model.
