Our verdict

A configurable open-source assistant; the CLI worked with a local model through a YAML config.

Good for

  • Developers who want an open-source assistant with local-model support

Skip if

  • You want a zero-config experience

Tested. Tested 2026-10-25 (America/Chicago). Continue CLI 1.5.47 answered a question and fixed a one-line bug with a local 3B model through a YAML config; a 1.6 s, 81 MB install. Test environment: Linux x86_64 virtual machine (Debian 13), 8 vCPU, 15 GiB RAM, no GPU; no vendor account, login or API key. Models were local (Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct (Q4_K_M) through Ollama 0.40.11); we tested the tool, not any vendor's hosted models. Not tested: The IDE extensions, hub-hosted configs and any hosted model; Reliability: the edit task ran once, so this is an existence proof, not a pass rate. These are smoke tests, not a benchmark. Full log: /tests/continue-cli.
