Search and research
- Perplexity: built around answers with linked sources; Pro adds deep research and lets you choose between models (its Pro page lists GPT-6.1 Sol, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Kimi K3, GLM 5.3 and Grok 4.7); Max adds "expert level research" and frontier models.
- ChatGPT: deep research is limited on Free, expanded on Plus and at its maximum on Pro (chatgpt.com/pricing).
- Neither vendor publishes a deep-research count on the pages we read, so we do not give one.
Beyond search
- ChatGPT: Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS from Plus; ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile; image creation; projects and scheduled tasks; on Pro, Dot, "your always-on agent". See ChatGPT Work vs chat.
- Perplexity: Computer, which "creates personalized apps, tools, docs, and more", with credits on Pro and Max; documents and apps from Pro.
Free plans compared
ChatGPT Free gives unlimited text chats with GPT-6 (subject to abuse guardrails) and limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex. Perplexity's free Standard plan gives "practically unlimited basic searches" and a "very limited amount of Pro Searches", with no advanced models or image generation.
Business and enterprise seats
ChatGPT Business is $20 per user a month billed annually for 2+ users, or $25 billed monthly, with no training on business data by default (Codex pricing doc). Perplexity sells Enterprise Pro and Enterprise Max; we did not confirm their per-seat prices on Nov 3, so we do not state them.
Which to pick when
- Pick Perplexity Pro if you research daily, want sources on every answer and can pay annually ($17 a month).
- Pick ChatGPT Plus if you also write, code with Codex, make images or run scheduled tasks ($20 a month).
- Pick ChatGPT Go if you mainly want more messages for $8 and can accept that it may include ads.
