Our verdict

Use the thinking rerun if prompt-following misses are your pain; be careful with privacy when sharing folders.

Good for

  • Designers who iterate on images with a team
  • Users of 8.2 who want better prompt adherence
  • People who want a web app rather than Discord

Skip if

  • You need private-by-default collaboration
  • You want open weights or local control

Status: Reported. This write-up is based on official release notes and docs; we have not run this release ourselves yet.

Best for

  • Best AI tool for images: Widely used image generator; this update adds prompt-correcting reruns and shared folders.

What’s new

Midjourney's alpha changelog titled 10/7/26 (published Oct 8) adds a 'thinking' rerun for images made with version 8.2 and shared folders with collaborator and viewer roles.

  • Thinking mode: rerun jobs made with 8.2 (standard and edit) with 'thinking', where Midjourney finds where the image missed your prompt (objects, layout, anatomy, text) and generates again. Early version.
  • Shared folders: invite people as Collaborators (can generate into the folder) or Viewers, or share by link.
  • Warning: sharing a folder does not change image privacy; non-stealth images can still appear on Explore and profiles.
  • Fixes for stalled edits, keyboard shortcuts under dialogs, and long history catch-up; pin folders in the sidebar.

How to set it up: Try the thinking rerun

Steps come from the vendor's own pages or docs. We have not run them ourselves.

  2. Generate with 8.2

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Frequent weekly changelog
  • Shared folders with roles
  • Active feedback loop with users

Cons

  • Fast GPU hours are capped per plan, so heavy use needs a higher tier or Relax mode (plan details from third-party guides)
  • Privacy caveat with shared folders
  • Thinking is an early version

Alternatives and comparisons

  • ComfyUI: Node-graph engine for local and cloud image, video, audio and 3D generation.
  • ChatGPT: OpenAI's assistant for chat, writing, images, voice and agent-style work.
  • Runway: AI video and creative suite with an MCP server, Agent, and many partner models.
  • FLUX (Black Forest Labs): Black Forest Labs' FLUX image models, available through an API with per-image pricing; the flux GitHub repository is Apache-2.0.
