Our verdict

The tool to learn if you want maximum control over open models on your own GPU; it has a learning curve.

Good for

  • Power users who want to run open models locally
  • Artists building repeatable image or video workflows
  • People who want to mix local models with partner nodes

Skip if

  • You want a one-click consumer app
  • You do not have a capable GPU and do not want to use partner (paid) nodes

Tested. Tested 2026-10-26 (America/Chicago). ComfyUI 0.42.0 installed in 17.42 s and its CPU-only server was ready in 30.1 s with 1014 node types, but we did not generate an image. Test environment: Linux x86_64 virtual machine (Debian 13), 8 vCPU, 15 GiB RAM, no GPU; no vendor account, login or API key. No language model was involved in this test. Not tested: Generating any image: no checkpoint was downloaded (the SD-Turbo file we considered is 5.2 GB, and the machine's free memory could not hold it); GPU use, custom nodes, the ComfyUI Manager, workflows from the web interface, and the browser UI; Speed of image generation on CPU or on a GPU. These are smoke tests, not a benchmark. Full log: /tests/comfyui.

Use the built-in workflow templates to generate your first image before you build graphs from scratch.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Huge model and workflow ecosystem
  • Runs locally; README claims it can run big models on as little as 4GB VRAM with 8GB RAM
  • Frequent releases

Cons

  • GPL-3.0 license has copyleft obligations for derivatives
  • Steep learning curve
  • Partner nodes use paid third-party models

Alternatives and comparisons

  • Midjourney: Image (and video) generation with the alpha.midjourney.com web app.
  • Runway: AI video and creative suite with an MCP server, Agent, and many partner models.
  • Luma: AI video and image studio with its own Ray models and now Kling 4.0, all in one project board.
  • FLUX (Black Forest Labs): Black Forest Labs' FLUX image models, available through an API with per-image pricing; the flux GitHub repository is Apache-2.0.
