Claude Code vs Cursor: which AI coding tool fits your workflow? (October 2026)

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that runs in the terminal, IDE extensions, a desktop app and the browser, and is included in paid Claude plans from $20 a month. Cursor is a coding agent built around its own editor, with cloud agents, Git hosting and plans from $0 to $200 a month, plus third-party models billed separately. Pick Claude Code for terminal and CI-style work, Cursor for an editor-first workflow. We smoke-tested Claude Code only on a small local model, not Claude models, and have not run Cursor.

Our pick: Pick Claude Code for anyone relying on the Bash sandbox or permission rules (the 2.1.309 fixes close real gaps); pick Cursor for teams that want cloud agents with shared, scriptable environments. No overall winner: we have not benchmarked them against each other. Updated (America/Chicago).

Evidence: Claude Code is Tested (smoke test, 2026-10-25, local Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct, not Claude models). Cursor is Reported (not run by us). Prices were read from the vendors' pricing pages on 2026-10-25. We did not compare the two head to head.

What we measured

We have run Claude Code ourselves but not the other tool, so no head-to-head result exists yet. Everything else on this page is Reported from vendor and GitHub pages.

Hands-on test log (install and a real task)Tested: Claude Code 2.1.310, Oct 25, 2026: partly worked. Claude Code 2.1.310 edited calc.py through its Edit tool with a local 3B model on the second prompt (85.9 s); the first, vaguer prompt made no edit. Full test logNot tested yet. What we will run: the same failing-unit-test fix in a fresh repository, scored by whether the tests pass, with wall time and tool calls.

What we ran, and what we did not

We ran Claude Code once. On 2026-10-25 we installed it with Anthropic's native installer (claude --version printed 2.1.310) and ran one headless edit task, changing a-b to a+b in calc.py, through a small local model (Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct, 4-bit, on Ollama 0.40.11). Our first, vaguer prompt failed and a second prompt with the exact path and strings succeeded. We did not use a Claude model, a subscription login or any Claude Code feature that needs a signed-in session. Read the full scope on the Claude Code page.

We have not run Cursor. Everything about Cursor here comes from its pricing page, docs and changelog, read on 2026-10-25, and is labelled Reported. We have not run the two tools against each other, so nothing on this page says which one writes better code or finishes tasks faster.

Because of that, this page compares what the vendors document: where each tool runs, how it is priced, and which models it supports. Ranking on our best AI coding agents page is editorial judgement, explained in how we pick.

Where each tool runs

Claude Code's overview describes one engine reached from several places: a terminal CLI, extensions for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, and a browser version at claude.ai/code. It says repo-level CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers work across all of them. The same page links an Install for Cursor option next to the VS Code extension, so Claude Code can also be installed inside Cursor. We have not tried that.

Cursor is organised around its own editor with an agent built in. Its docs describe it as a coding agent for understanding a codebase, planning and building features, fixing bugs and reviewing changes, and list integrations with GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, JetBrains, Slack and Linear.

In practice the difference is the centre of gravity. Claude Code starts from the command line and can be piped and scripted (its docs show claude -p in pipes and CI, plus GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD). Cursor starts from the editor.

Agents, background work and automation

Agent and automation features each vendor documents (Reported unless noted)
CapabilityClaude CodeCursor
Parallel agentsSpawn multiple agents with a lead agent that coordinates; background agents run full sessions side by sideCloud agents; environments support up to 300 repositories (changelog, Oct 16)
Scheduled or event-driven runsCloud scheduled tasks, desktop scheduled tasks and /loopCloud agents and automations on Premium and above
CI and code reviewGitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Code ReviewAI code reviews via Bugbot and code hosting via Origin on Premium and above
CustomisationCLAUDE.md, skills, hooks, MCP; can read AGENTS.md instead of CLAUDE.mdPlugins, skills, MCPs and rules; team marketplace on Teams and Enterprise
Programmable accessAgent SDK for building custom agentsEnvironments API (beta, changelog Oct 16)

None of these features were exercised in our smoke test. The lists are what the docs and changelog say each tool offers, so treat them as Reported.

Models and lock-in

Claude Code needs a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account for most surfaces. Its docs say the terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains also support third-party providers, and our entry notes mentions of Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry in its release notes.

Cursor's models page lists models from Anthropic (Claude Opus, Sonnet and Haiku versions), OpenAI (GPT-5 family), Google (Gemini), Z.ai, Moonshot, Meta and Cursor's own models. Its pricing page says third-party models are available at API list price, billed separately from the plan price.

So the practical question is not which tool has the better model. It is whether you want one vendor's models inside a tool tied to a subscription (Claude Code), or a menu of providers billed by usage (Cursor). Which models perform best for your code is something we have not measured.

MaxFrom $100/month (5x or 20x Pro usage)Yes
Team and EnterprisePer seat; Enterprise is $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, per the pricing FAQYes
Cursor plans (cursor.com/pricing)
PlanPriceWhat the page says
Free$0Limited agent and chat requests
Plus$8/monthShared usage pool; only Grok models on this plan
Premium$30/month4x the usage of Plus; cloud agents and automations, code hosting, AI code reviews, third-party models at API list price
Super$100/month15x Plus usage; priority model access at peak times
Ultra$200/month50x Plus usage; earliest access to products and models
TeamsFrom $30/user/monthAdmin, SSO and privacy controls
EnterpriseCustomPooled usage, invoicing, audit logs and more

Two cautions. Claude Code shares one usage pool with the rest of your Claude plan, and the pricing FAQ says limits reset on a rolling five-hour window with weekly limits on paid plans, so a flat monthly price does not mean unlimited use. Cursor's multipliers (4x, 15x, 50x) are vendor figures we did not test, and its pricing page also bundles non-coding plan features, so read what each tier includes. See also the pricing notes on the Claude Code and Cursor pages. Prices change; check the vendor pages before you buy.

How to choose

These are conclusions from the documented features above, not from a test of output quality.

  • Choose Claude Code if you work in the terminal, want to script or schedule agent runs in CI, already pay for Claude Pro or Max, or want the same agent across the terminal, an IDE, desktop and web.
  • Choose Cursor if you want the agent built into an editor, want cloud agents with Git hosting and AI code review in one product, or want to switch between several model providers and pay by usage.
  • Try both if you are undecided. Cursor has a free plan with limited usage. Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic Console account, and the docs say it can be installed inside Cursor.
  • Look further if you want an open-source or free CLI. Our alternatives to Cursor and Claude Code vs Codex CLI pages cover other options.

Getting started

Claude Code: run curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash on macOS, Linux or WSL, open a new terminal, check claude --version, then run claude inside a project and log in. Homebrew (brew install --cask claude-code) and WinGet (winget install Anthropic.ClaudeCode) are also documented; those do not auto-update.

Cursor: download the editor from cursor.com/download, open a project and start an agent chat. We did not verify install steps beyond the download page.

FAQ

Is Claude Code better than Cursor?

We cannot say. We have not run the two tools against each other, and our one Claude Code smoke test used a small local model rather than Claude models. They differ in where they run: Claude Code from the terminal, IDE extensions, desktop and web, Cursor from its own editor. Choose by workflow, not by a score we have not measured.

Is Claude Code free?

Not on the Claude Free plan. Claude's pricing page (read 2026-10-25) lists Claude Code as included on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and not on Free. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually. Claude's FAQ also mentions pay-as-you-go API credits through a Console account.

How much does Cursor cost?

Cursor's pricing page (read 2026-10-25) lists a free plan with limited usage, then Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200 a month, Teams from $30 per user per month, and custom Enterprise pricing. Third-party model usage is billed separately at API list price.

Can I use Claude Code inside Cursor?

Claude Code's overview page lists a VS Code extension with an Install for Cursor option, so the vendor documents it. We have not tried it. Cursor also lists Anthropic's Claude models in its own model picker.

Which one can use more AI models?

Cursor's models page lists models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Z.ai, Moonshot, Meta and Cursor itself. Claude Code is built around Claude models, and its docs say the terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains also support third-party providers.

Have you tested Claude Code and Cursor?

We smoke-tested Claude Code on 2026-10-25 on a Linux box with a small local model (Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct), not Claude models. We have not run Cursor. See the scope on each tool page.

Should I use both?

Many setups can. Claude Code documents an extension for Cursor, so the two are not mutually exclusive. Whether using both helps your work is something we have not tested.
