Claude Code vs Aider

As of Nov 3, 2026 (CT), Aider is free, Apache-2.0 software: you install it with pip and pay only your model provider, including local models. Claude Code comes with paid Claude plans: Pro at $17 a month billed annually ($20 monthly), Max at $100 and Ultra at $200. It is not on Claude Free. Pick Aider for any model and git-first edits; pick Claude Code to stay inside Anthropic's plans.

Our pick: Pick Aider if you want a free, open-source tool that works with any model and commits each change to git; pick Claude Code if you already pay for Claude and want it in your terminal, IDE and desktop app. Updated (America/Chicago).

Last verified Nov 3, 2026 (America/Chicago) on Claude pricing, Claude Code docs, aider.chat, PyPI and the GitHub API. Evidence: Mixed. Our smoke tests of both tools on Oct 25, 2026 are Tested within their scope (a local 3B model on a CPU-only box); prices and features are Reported from the vendors.

Each row compares one recorded fact for both tools. Rows are not weighted and nothing is added up into a score; the note under each row says what the marker means.

Claude's pricing FAQ says "Claude Code is included in all paid plans" and that it shares the same usage limits as the rest of the plan. Aider has no price of its own: the bill is whatever your model provider charges. GitHub showed 49,924 stars for Aider on Nov 3. Sources: Claude pricing, aider.chat, PyPI, npm. For Claude plan details, see Claude Code pricing.

Models

Aider's homepage says it works best with frontier models but "can connect to almost any LLM, including local models". Claude Code is built for Claude models on a Claude plan; it can also be pointed at a local model through an Anthropic-compatible API, which is how we ran it (see run Claude Code with a local model). For model choices, see best model for OpenCode, Cline and Claude Code.

Workflow

  • Aider: "automatically commits changes with sensible commit messages", so you diff, manage and undo AI edits with ordinary git; it builds a map of the codebase to work in larger projects; it supports 100+ languages (aider.chat).
  • Claude Code: "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools"; its docs cover the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, Slack, code review and running Claude in your own CI (Claude Code docs).
  • Both are command-line first. Aider leaves the model choice entirely to you; Claude Code keeps you inside Anthropic's plans and usage limits.

Install and first run

# Aider (Python 3.8-3.13, per aider.chat/docs/install)
python -m pip install aider-install
aider-install

# Claude Code (native installer, as used in our test)
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash

Aider's install page says aider-install can set up its own Python 3.12 if needed (install docs). Step-by-step: how to use Claude Code.

What we ran (Oct 25, 2026)

Both tools were smoke-tested on a CPU-only Linux VM (8 vCPU, no GPU) against Qwen2.5-3B-Instruct served by Ollama 0.40.11, with no vendor account or API key. These are pass/fail checks of one small task each, not a quality or speed ranking: the two tools were given different tasks.

Which to pick when

FAQ

Is Aider free?

Yes. Aider is Apache-2.0 open-source software with no price of its own; you pay your model provider, or nothing if you run a local model.

Is Claude Code included in Claude Free?

No. Claude's pricing page, read Nov 3, 2026, lists Claude Code on Pro, Max and Ultra, and its FAQ says Claude Code is included in all paid plans.

Can Claude Code use a local model?

We ran Claude Code 2.1.310 against a local Qwen2.5-3B model through Ollama on Oct 25, 2026; it made the edit on the second prompt. That is our smoke test, not a vendor-supported setup claim.

Does Aider commit to git automatically?

Aider's homepage says it automatically commits changes with sensible commit messages. We disabled that in our test, so this is Reported.
