What is an AI coding agent? How it differs from autocomplete (2026)

An AI coding agent is a tool where a language model plans a coding task and carries it out itself: it reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and tests, and uses the results to decide the next step. That is different from autocomplete or chat, which suggest code for you to place. Examples include Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot's cloud agent, goose and opencode, and we have smoke-tested four of them.

Evidence: the definitions below are Reported from the vendors' and Anthropic's own documents, read on 2026-10-25. Four of the example tools (Claude Code, Codex CLI, goose, opencode) got a small smoke test on 2026-10-25 using a small local model, not the vendors' hosted models; Cursor and GitHub Copilot are Reported only.

AI coding agent meaning in one paragraph

Anthropic separates two kinds of agentic systems: workflows, where models and tools follow predefined code paths, and agents, "where LLMs dynamically direct their own processes and tool usage, maintaining control over how they accomplish tasks". It adds that agents are "typically just LLMs using tools based on environmental feedback in a loop". An AI coding agent is that loop pointed at software: the model reads code, makes a change, runs something, looks at the result and decides what to do next.

Vendors describe the same thing in product terms. Claude Code's docs call it "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools". GitHub's docs say Copilot's cloud agent can "research a repository, plan changes, and complete multi-step tasks by reading files, editing code, and running tests". Cursor's docs call it "a coding agent for building ambitious software".

How a coding agent works

Anthropic describes the loop: the task starts from a command or discussion with a person; the agent plans and operates independently; at each step it gets "ground truth" from the environment, such as tool call results or code execution; and it can pause for human feedback at checkpoints or blockers. Tasks usually end on completion, and stopping conditions such as a maximum number of iterations keep control with you.

  • Read. The agent explores files and the repository to understand the codebase.
  • Plan. It breaks the request into steps. Claude Code's docs say it "plans the approach, writes the code across multiple files, and verifies it works".
  • Act. It edits files and runs commands such as tests and linters. GitHub's cloud agent does this in an ephemeral cloud development environment rather than your local editor.
  • Check. It looks at the output and decides whether to continue, fix or stop.
  • Hand back. It leaves changes for you, often as a branch or pull request, to review.

The smoke tests ran each tool once with a small local model on a Linux box; they show that the tool installs and can edit a file, not how well it performs with the vendors' own models. See each tool page for exactly what was and was not tested.

Limits and risks

  • Cost and compounding errors. Anthropic says the autonomous nature of agents means higher costs and the potential for compounding errors, and recommends extensive testing in sandboxed environments with appropriate guardrails.
  • Human review still matters. Anthropic notes that automated tests verify functionality, but human review remains crucial to ensure solutions fit broader system requirements.
  • Not always the right tool. Anthropic recommends the simplest solution that works and adding agentic complexity only when it improves outcomes.
  • Vendor limits. GitHub's docs say Copilot's cloud agent works in one repository, on one branch and with one pull request per task, stops after 59 minutes and can produce incorrect code, including code with security vulnerabilities.

FAQ

What is an AI coding agent?

An AI coding agent is a tool where a language model plans a coding task and carries it out itself: reading your codebase, editing files, running commands and tests, and using the results to decide its next step.

How is a coding agent different from GitHub Copilot autocomplete?

Autocomplete suggests the next lines as you type. A coding agent takes a whole task, edits multiple files, runs commands and tests, and iterates. GitHub's Copilot offers both: code completions and a cloud agent that works on assigned tasks.

Are AI coding agents safe to run on my code?

Treat them like a fast junior contributor. Anthropic recommends sandboxed testing and guardrails, and GitHub warns that agent output can contain security vulnerabilities. Review changes and run your own tests before merging.

Which AI coding agents are open source?

Per the GitHub repositories we checked on 2026-10-25, Codex CLI and goose are Apache-2.0 and opencode is MIT. Model usage may still cost money, depending on the provider you connect.

Which coding agents have you tested?

We smoke-tested Claude Code, Codex CLI, goose and opencode on 2026-10-25 using a small local model, not vendor-hosted models. Cursor and GitHub Copilot are Reported only.

What is the difference between an AI agent and an AI workflow?

Anthropic defines workflows as LLMs and tools orchestrated through predefined code paths, and agents as systems where the LLM dynamically directs its own process and tool use.
