What is vibe coding? Meaning, how it works and the risks (2026)

Vibe coding is writing code or building apps by telling an AI what you want and letting it write the code, often without reading or fully understanding what it produced. The term was coined in early 2025 and is now used both for throwaway experiments and, in a more careful form, for AI-assisted development where you still review and test the output. We have not run the tools named here for this page, so tool claims are Reported.

Evidence: the definition, history and workflow below are Reported from Merriam-Webster, Google Cloud and Replit's documentation, read on 2026-10-25. We did not run Lovable, Replit or Cursor for this page; Claude Code appears only as an example agent and was smoke-tested separately (see its tool page).

Vibe coding meaning in one paragraph

Merriam-Webster defines vibe coding as "writing computer code in a somewhat careless fashion, with AI assistance", and describes it as "writing code, making web pages, or creating apps, by just telling an AI program what you want, and letting it create the product for you". In its description the coder does not need to understand how or why the code works, and often has to accept that some bugs and glitches will be present. The dictionary adds that the word is more jargon than slang and may change meaning as it spreads.

Where it came from: Merriam-Webster says the word is believed to have been coined by an AI researcher in a social media post on 2 February 2025, describing a way of working where you "fully give in to the vibes" and "forget that the code even exists". Google Cloud's guide dates the term to early 2025 as well.

Two ways people use the term

Pure vs responsible vibe coding (as described by Google Cloud)
Feature"Pure" vibe codingResponsible AI-assisted development
What you doTrust the AI's output to work as intendedGuide the AI, then review, test and understand the code it writes
Best forRapid ideas and throwaway weekend projects where speed matters mostProfessional work where you take ownership of the result
Your rolePrompterPrompter, reviewer and owner of the product

Google Cloud's guide frames the difference this way: in the pure form you trust the output, in the responsible form AI tools act as a pair programmer and you stay accountable for the code. Searching for "vibe coding" usually mixes the two, so check which one an article means.

How vibe coding works

Google Cloud describes a tight code-level loop, and Replit's documentation gives five principles for working with its Agent. Both come down to the same cycle.

  1. Describe the goal in plain language, such as "create a user login form".
  2. The AI generates code or a first version of the app.
  3. Run it and see whether it works as intended.
  4. Give feedback to fix errors or add features.
  5. Repeat until it is done, then have a person review security, quality and correctness before deployment.

Replit's "Vibe coding 101" lists five principles: start with the goal, build in small slices, manage context, review and test, and improve with feedback. It stresses that you rarely get the final app in one step, and that you decide whether the result works. Google Cloud's lifecycle adds a final stage it calls "vibe deploying": launching the app to a live environment with one click or prompt.

Risks and limits

  • Bugs you do not understand. Merriam-Webster notes that the coder often has to accept some bugs and glitches, and quotes press coverage saying enterprises typically require maintainability and reliability standards that vibe-coded software may struggle to meet.
  • Simple is easy, hard is not. Google Cloud says a prototype or landing page takes little effort, but edge cases, complex bugs and security still need a clear understanding of logic and troubleshooting.
  • The tool can be wrong. Replit's pricing page says its Agent is powered by large language models and its behavior is probabilistic, so it may make mistakes. Review and test before real users rely on it.
  • Security. Replit publishes a security checklist for vibe-coded apps. Treat anything handling logins, payments or personal data as needing a human review.

Tools people use for vibe coding

Google Cloud groups vibe coding tools into full-stack web app builders (for rapid prototypes and non-technical MVPs) and AI code editors and terminal agents (for existing codebases and production-ready software). On this site, examples in each group are:

How to start safely

  1. Pick a small, low-stakes project, such as a personal landing page or a script.
  2. Start from a plain-language goal and ask for one small piece at a time.
  3. Run what the AI built and click through it yourself instead of trusting its summary.
  4. Keep the code in version control so you can undo changes.
  5. Before sharing it, check anything that touches accounts, payments or personal data.

FAQ

What does vibe coding mean?

Vibe coding means building software by describing what you want to an AI and letting it write the code, often without fully understanding or reviewing the result. Merriam-Webster defines it as writing computer code in a somewhat careless fashion, with AI assistance.

Who coined the term vibe coding?

Merriam-Webster says the term is believed to have been coined by an AI researcher in a post on X dated 2 February 2025. Google Cloud also dates it to early 2025.

Is vibe coding the same as using an AI coding assistant?

Not exactly. Google Cloud describes two uses: pure vibe coding, where you trust the output, and responsible AI-assisted development, where you review and test what the AI writes and take ownership of the product.

Do you need to know how to code to vibe code?

Not to start. Google Cloud says anyone can do it because it relies on plain-language instructions, but it adds that edge cases, complex bugs and security still require a clear understanding of logic and troubleshooting.

What are the risks of vibe coding?

Bugs and glitches you do not understand, code that is hard to maintain, security gaps and AI mistakes. Review and test AI-written code, especially before it handles money or personal data.

Which tools are used for vibe coding?

Google Cloud groups them into full-stack web app builders and AI code editors or terminal agents. On this site, Lovable and Replit are app builders; Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Claude Code are editor or terminal tools. Only Claude Code has been smoke-tested by us.
